MyEcoBabe

I have a deep admiration for mumpreneurs - mums who decide to stop being employees and start their own business when baby comes along. Most mumpreneurs I know do this because they can better manage their time, and therefore, spend more time with their family, while continuing to contribute to the family income and keep themselves in touch with the commercial world beyond the confines of home. I think it's such a great way to try to achieve better work-life balance.

I recently got to know Sherlyn, the mumpreneur behind MyEcoBabe when she commented on some posts on this blog. Like me, Sherlyn recently left a demanding job to be a SAHM to spend more time with her little boy. Unlike me, however, Sherlyn is not only looking after her son but also running her own online boutique. MyEcoBabe is her other baby, a store specialising in high quality organic, eco-friendly and sweat-shop free clothing and accessories for babies and children. Having a passion for the environment, Sherlyn saw that there was a lack of eco-friendly organic products in Singapore. MyEcoBabe was born out of her aspiration to give parents choices that would enable them to care for their babies and the environment at the same time. "At MyEcoBabe, you can expect to find chic and affordable eco-friendly clothing and accessories for your little precious ones, which are either made from organic cotton/eco- friendly materials and/or sweatshop-free. The featured designers have a passion for creating items of one of the highest quality and style, while helping to preserve the environment," says Sherlyn.

I clicked on her link the first time she made contact, and was immediately taken by the Little Alouette teethers that are part of her product range. I had seen these on some US sites that I visit and at that time, remember thinking that it was such a pity these are not on sale in Singapore. I do love wooden toys! Besides being super cute, these wooden teethers are also provide a safe and non-toxic sensory experience. Wood is naturally antibacterial and these teethers, if not unfinished, are finished with certified flax seed oil. Non-plastic and therefore also BPA-free. What's there not to love! I only regret that I've discovered these too late, after Naomi has outgrown teething toys. Still good for gifts though!

Another product line which I loved were the absolutely beautiful Joyfolie shoes. The first thing I asked when I first came across these shoes was "does this come in an adult size??" (Sadly, no.) I received a pair for Naomi to try, and not surprisingly, she was taken with them as well. She insisted on putting them on the moment I pulled them out of the package and now still makes a beeline for them when she sees them. I don't blame her - they're so pretty!

Joyfolie's kids' shoes were originally handmade, but demand for them was so high that they are now being manufactured. Like all products carried by MyEcoBabe, Joyfolie's products are eco-friendly as they contain organic cotton and recycled rubber. they even come packaged in a reusable fabric bag. I found it cute that every pair of shoes also comes with a matching hair clip. The smaller sizes also come with a thin elastic strap to help hold the shoes in place.

Being as colourful as they are, I was happy that the shoes were surprisingly versatile. I think they look best with red, to set off the eye-catching red ribbon in front. The matching red ribbon felt a bit much for me though, so I swapped it for a blue clip from our own collection.

It went pretty well with this dress too, even with the busy print, thanks to the complementary colours. Here Nomi is wearing the red rose clip that came with the shoes.

Wasn't too bad with pink either, as a pop of colour, I thought.

(Yes, I had quite a bit of fun dressing my daughter up. Thankfully she was mostly quite cooperative.)

We also tried a lovely little swimsuit from Lil' Ludy but it was still a bit big for Nomi. I think size 2 will fit her better when she's 2 years old. 'Twas a pity because I really liked the somewhat retro tie-back design, and the happy yellow polka-dot print, and was looking forward to bringing her swimming in it! I really think Australian swimwear is the nicest on the market. And these from Lil Ludy are 100% Australian made and designed, ensuring that it is sweatshop-free and made in accordance with ethical practices.
